Spring has arrived with April showers!

Spring has arrived with April showers!

Spring has arrived with April showers!

April 16, 2016 Gardening

I hope this newsletter finds you well and ready for spring! Now that was a very strange winter! I hope we can say that it’s over finally.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
– pull on your boots and do a garden walkabout. You will be surprised at all the signs of growth. There is nothing more exciting than seeing your hellebore flowers poking out from under the leaves!
– clean up your gardens so that the spring flowers such as tulips, daffs, and hyacinths, can push their way up and bloom!
– you can start pruning shrubs (unless they are spring flowering shrubs, then wait until they have finished blooming), rose bushes, and clematis now.
– sow your flower seeds indoors (see below for more details).

Hello fellow gardeners and friends! Karin here.
I hope this newsletter finds you well and ready for spring! Now that was a very strange winter! I hope we can say that it’s over finally.

Poor daffy.
Here’s what our gardens looked like just a few days ago. However as a seasoned gardener, I have been watching the weather forecast. It’s looking better for the next couple of weeks! I think I can say with confidence….let’s get out there and plant our early spring bulbs and pansies. Start seeding or transplanting onions, lettuce, any of the cabbage family crops such as; brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, and of course, cabbage!
Miya in the garden on one of the first warm days of 2015.
No, don’t think this happened already this year! This is a photo of Miya (one of my sweet munchkins) from last spring. Karina (my niece and namesake, and Miya’s mommy) and I were preparing the gardens to plant, and Miya just had to help! I love to teach kids about gardening and where food comes from starting at a very young age. It’s a benefit that they will and can use their entire lives. I am ready to dig in this year!! Coming to help Miya?
This is one of my favourite sights. Now is a good time to start seeding your flowers for outdoor planting in May. Start your marigolds, impatiens, alyssum, and many other annuals now. Now is the time to start your tomatoes and peppers as well. Wait to seed your cucumbers, squash, and pumpkins until the ground is warm and seed them directly outdoors!
If you are one of my clients that has your containers planted seasonally, you will be seeing me in the very near future! I will be starting to plant all of your containers full with lovely spring flowers and branches next week. If you would like to be there or want to join me in being creative, shoot me an email or text and we can make a date!
For those of you who would like to have me come in and fill youroutdoor containers to the brim with flowers, contact me via my website (see below).

Happy Spring to all!!
